Field & Laboratory Research
Active Projects
From the ocean floor to tectonic fault lines, our projects push the boundaries of what is known about Earth's geological systems. Each expedition generates data that reshapes scientific understanding.

Ongoing Expeditions
Southwest Indian Ridge Hydrothermal Survey
A multi-year survey of hydrothermal vent fields along the ultra-slow spreading Southwest Indian Ridge. The project combines ROV dives, water column sampling, and seafloor heat flow measurements to characterize fluid flux dynamics and associated chemosynthetic ecosystems.
Pacific Seamount Chain Bathymetric Mapping
High-resolution multibeam sonar mapping of previously uncharted seamount chains in the Central Pacific. The dataset will inform models of hotspot volcanism and intraplate tectonic stress, and provide baseline data for future biological surveys.
Cascadia Subduction Zone Seismic Monitoring
Continuous seismic and GPS monitoring of the Cascadia subduction zone to constrain interseismic coupling and assess long-term seismic hazard. The project integrates onshore geodetic networks with offshore ocean bottom seismometers.
South Atlantic Sediment Core Archive
Systematic recovery and analysis of deep-sea sediment cores from the South Atlantic basin to reconstruct paleoclimate and ocean circulation over the past 1.2 million years. Cores are archived at the OERI facility in Tortola for long-term scientific access.
Northern Andes GPS Geodesy Campaign
A dense GPS network deployed across the Northern Andes to measure surface deformation associated with the subduction of the Nazca Plate. Data are used to model interseismic strain accumulation and evaluate earthquake recurrence intervals.
Deep-Sea Rare Earth Element Survey
Systematic geochemical survey of hydrothermal precipitates and sediments across the Western Pacific to characterize rare earth element (REE) distributions. Findings will contribute to global REE cycling models and evaluate potential resource significance.
